How to Find Out How Much Student Loan You Owe

If you’re not sure how much money you owe in student loans, there are a few ways to find out. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to find your loan balance.

Log into the National Student Loan Data System

The first step in finding out how much money you owe in student loans is to log into the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS). This is the U.S. Department of Education’s centralized database for all federal student loans. You can access the NSLDS by visiting www.nslds.ed.gov and logging in with your Federal Student Aid (FSA) ID.

Once you’re logged in, you’ll be able to see all of the federal student loans that you have borrowed, as well as the outstanding balance for each loan. The NSLDS will also provide information on your loan servicer, which is the organization that you make your loan payments to each month. If you have multiple loans with different servicers, it’s important to keep track of who each one is so that you can make your payments on time.

If you don’t have an FSA ID or if you can’t remember your login information, you can click on the “Forgot Your FSA ID?” or “Forgot Your Password?” links on the NSLDS login page to retrieve your FSA ID or reset your password.

Select the Report Type

To find out how much student loan you owe, you’ll need to request a report from the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS). This is the U.S. Department of Education’s central database for student aid.

To get started, go to www.nslds.ed.gov and select “Log In.” You’ll need to enter your FSA ID to access your account information.

Once you’re logged in, select “Financial Aid Review” from the menu options. On the next page, you’ll see a list of all the federal student loans and other financial aid you’ve received. Each loan will show the lender’s name, the type of loan, the original loan amount, and the amount you currently owe.

Generate a Detailed Loan Summary

Log in to your account via the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS) at www.nslds.ed.gov. Your loan summary will list all of your federal student loans along with disbursement information, outstanding balance, repayment status, and loan servicer contact information.

Review Your Loan Summary

To find out how much money you owe in federal student loans, start by logging into your account on the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS). This is the U.S. Department of Education’s central database for student aid.

Once you’re logged in, click on the “Financial Aid Review” tab. Then, scroll down to the “Loan History” section. Here, you’ll see a list of all the federal loans you’ve ever received, including Direct Subsidized and Unsubsidized Loans, PLUS Loans, and Stafford Loans.

If your loan is in deferment or forbearance, there will be an indication of that here as well. You can also see whether your loan is in good standing or if you’re behind on your payments.
