Visa and Mastercard credit card numbers have 16 digits.
The current standard is 16 digits for both Visa and Mastercard credit card numbers. These numbers are generated randomly and are not connected to personal information like your name or address. The first six digits of a credit card number are known as the issuer identification number (IIN), sometimes referred to as the bank identification number (BIN). The IIN makes up the first six digits of all Visa credit card numbers, and the first three digits of all Mastercard credit card numbers.
American Express credit card numbers have 15 digits.
All American Express credit card numbers start with 34 or 37 and have 15 digits. The last digit is the check digit and it can be calculated using the Luhn algorithm.
Discover credit card numbers have 16 digits.
Discover credit card numbers have 16 digits. The first six digits of a Discover card number (before the account number) are the issuer identification number (IIN), sometimes referred to as the bank identification number (BIN).
The IIN makes up the first part of the ‘nine digit’ credit card number. MasterCard and Visa credit card numbers have a similar format and are also divided into four parts. The first two digits of a MasterCard or Visa credit card number (before the account number) are the IIN.
The number of digits in a credit card number does not affect its security.
The number of digits in a credit card number does not affect its security. All major credit cards have 16 digits, but some cards also have additional numbers or letters on the front or back.
