The Numbers on a Credit Card
A credit card number is the long set of digits displayed on the front of your credit card. It is typically 16 digits long, but may be anywhere from 12 to 19 digits. The credit card number is used to identify the card and the cardholder. The first few digits of the credit card number indicate the card type and the issuing bank.
The Card Number
The credit card number is the long number across the front of your card. The credit card number is also embossed on the back of your card, usually in a different color. The credit card number is used to identify your credit card so that when you make a purchase, the credit card company can process your payment.
The Expiration Date
The expiration date is the last day that a particular credit card can be used. After that date, the card is no longer valid. The expiration date is typically printed on the front of the credit card, along with the cardholder’s name and the credit card number.
The expiration date is usually two years after the credit card was issued, although some cards have shorter expiration dates. For example, American Express cards typically have expiration dates that are one year after the date of issuance.
When a credit card expires, the cardholder can usually request a new credit card with a new expiration date from their issuer. The issuer may also send the cardholder a new credit card automatically when their old credit card expires.
The Security Code
The security code is the three- or four-digit number printed on your credit card. It is sometimes referred to as the card verification value (CVV) or card verification code (CVC).
The security code is an important security feature — it helps to verify that you are in possession of your physical credit card. When you make an online or telephone purchase, the security code helps to validate that you are the rightful owner of the credit card.
When entering your security code, be sure to use the numbers from the front of your credit card. The security code for American Express cards is a four-digit number printed on the front of the card, above and to the right of the embossed account number. For Visa, MasterCard and Discover cards, the security code is a three-digit number printed on the back of the card, to the right of the signature strip.
How to Find Your Credit Card Number
Your credit card number is typically 16 digits long and is usually located on the front of your card. The number may be printed on the back of your card in some cases. If you cannot find your credit card number, you can typically find it in your credit card statement.
On the Card Itself
If you have the physical credit card in front of you, finding the number is quite simple. The vast majority of credit cards print the full 16-digit credit card number across the front of the card. Most also print the expiration date and a few other details in smaller print.
In Your Credit Card Statement
If you have a physical credit card, your credit card number will be printed on the front of the card. If you do not have a physical credit card, you can find your credit card number on your monthly statement.
To find your credit card number on your statement, look for a 16-digit number that starts with 4, 5, 6, or 7. This is your credit card number. If you cannot find your credit card number on your statement, call the customer service number on the back of your card and they will be able to help you.
In Your Online Credit Card Account
If you know the website of your credit card issuer, you can find your credit card number by logging into your account and going to the account information or profile section. You may have to provide additional personal information, such as your Social Security number or mother’s maiden name, to verify your identity.
In the account information section, you should be able to see all the numbers associated with your credit card, including the 16-digit credit card number. The credit card number may be listed with other account information, such as the expiration date and type of card.
How to Use Your Credit Card Number
Your credit card number is a 16-digit number that is unique to your card. This number is used to identify your credit card and is required for all online transactions. Your credit card number can be found on the front of your card, above the magnetic stripe.
For Online Purchases
When you’re making an online purchase, you’ll need to provide your credit card number, expiration date, and security code. The credit card number is the long numbers across the front of your card. The expiration date is usually two digits for the month and four digits for the year. The security code is the three-digit number on the back of your card, usually near the signature strip.
For Phone Purchases
If you’re going to make a purchase over the phone, the merchant will ask for your credit card number. The first set of numbers on your credit card is the issuer identification number (IIN), also called the bank identification number (BIN). This is the number that identifies which company issued the credit card. The next few digits are unique to your card and identify your account. The final digit is called a check digit, and it’s used to verify that the credit card is legitimate.
For In-Person Purchases
For in-person purchases, your credit card number is essential. This is the number that is embossed on the front of your card, and is also the number that is printed on the back in the signature strip. This is the most important number on your card as it is needed to process transactions.
When you make a purchase, you will need to present your credit card to the merchant. The merchant will then run your card through a machine that will read the credit card number and other information from the magnetic stripe on the back of your card. The machine will then generate a receipt for you to sign. Once you have signed the receipt, the transaction is complete.
