Introduction
Venom is a 2018 American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name, produced by Columbia Pictures in association with Marvel and Tencent Pictures. The film is directed by Ruben Fleischer from a screenplay by Jeff Pinkner, Scott Rosenberg, and Kelly Marcel, and stars Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock / Venom, alongside Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed, Scott Haze, and Reid Scott. In Venom, journalist Brock is infected with an alien symbiote that gives him superpowers.
The film was released in the United States on October 5, 2018. Venom received mixed reviews from critics; while Hardy’s performance and the presence of humor were praised, the plot and script were panned. Despite this, the film went on to gross over $855 million worldwide, becoming the ninth-highest-grossing film of 2018 and Sony’s biggest opening for an R-rated movie. A sequel is set for release in October 2020.
The film was nominated for Best Motion Picture – Animated at the 45th Annie Awards.
Three Post-Credit Scenes
Venom features three post-credit scenes, each of which sets up a different potential sequel. The first scene sees Eddie (Tom Hardy) and Venom bonding further as they share a pizza, with Venom suggesting that they go on “a little hunt” together. The second scene sees Eddie in prison, being approached by Carlton Drake (Riz Ahmed), the head of the Life Foundation who turns out to be the villainous Riot in the film. Drake offers Eddie a deal – he’ll get him out of prison if he agrees to be a test subject for the Foundation’s experiments. And finally, the third scene sees Eddie back at home with Venom, telling him that they’re going to have to be more careful in future as people are starting to catch on to their activities.
What Do They Mean?
Venom has not one, not two, but FIVE post-credits scenes. What do they all mean? Let’s break it down.
The first post-credits scene shows Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) visiting a sick child in the hospital as Venom. The child is revealed to be secretly a Symbiote, and bonds with Eddie, giving him cancer.
The second post-credits scene features Carlton Drake (Riz Ahmed) being brought aboard a spaceship by aliens, who reveal themselves to be the Symbiote’s creators. They want Drake to help them take over Earth.
The third post-credits scene sees Eddie returning home to find his apartment has been trashed by thugs sent by Drake. As he’s cleaning up, he gets a call from someone asking if he’s interested in working for the Life Foundation.
The fourth post-credits scene is a brief teaser for the sequel, which will see Venom face off against Carnage.
And finally, the fifth and final post-credits scene shows Eddie and Venom bonding even more as they eat a live rat together.
Conclusion
Venom has a grand total of five post-credits scenes. The first four tease different aspects of the greater Marvel universe, while the fifth is a mid-credits scene that sets up Venom’s next solo outing.
