How to Borrow Books from a Public Library
Your local public library probably has a digital collection of ebooks that you can borrow and read on your Kindle. In order to do this, you’ll need to connect your Kindle to your library’s website and have a valid library card. In this article, we’ll show you how to loan Kindle books from a public library.
Find a participating library
To find a participating library, visit www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=200127460, select your country, and then enter your zip code or city and state in the “Library Search” field. If you’re in the United States, you can also visit http://www.ala.org/universalitspublicationsMetadata standards brochurepage to find a library near you.
Check out a book
You can usually check out a book for two or three weeks, and renew it if no one else has put a hold on it. Some libraries have e-books and audiobooks that you can download to your phone or other device. To find out what your library has, search its website or visit in person.
Download the book to your Kindle
You can usually borrow Kindle books from your local library’s website. To do this, you’ll need to connect your Kindle to your computer and then use your web browser to visit your library’s website. Once you’re logged in, you’ll be able to browse the library’s selection of Kindle books and borrow one that you’d like to read.
Once you’ve borrowed a book, it will be delivered wirelessly to your Kindle device within a few minutes. You can return it early if you’d like, or keep it for the full loan period (which is generally two weeks). When the loan period expires, the book will automatically be returned to the library.
How to Borrow Books from a Friend
You can loan Kindle books to your friends or family members for up to fourteen days. The person who you loan the book to will need to have a Kindle device or the Kindle app installed on their device. Once you have loaned the book, it will appear on the home screen of their Kindle device.
Locate the book file
To find the book file, look in the Kindle content folder on your computer. The location of this folder will depend on which version of the Kindle software you are using. For Kindle for PC, open the “My Documents” folder, then open the “My Kindle Content” folder. For Mac, open the “Documents” folder, then open the “Library” folder, and finally open the “Application Support” folder. In both cases, you should see a list of all the books you have downloaded to your computer.
The file will have a “.mobi” extension if it is a native Kindle format book, or “.azw” if it is an Amazon eBook. If you are not sure which file to use, try both and see which one works.
Send the book to your Kindle
If you have a Kindle device, you can send the book to your Kindle device from your friend’s account. To do this, log in to your account on Amazon.com and go to Your Account > Manage Your Content and Devices. Select the Actions button next to the book you’d like to loan, then select Loan this title on your eligible title. Enter your friend’s name and email address, then select Send.
