Introduction
Your student loan account number is a unique identifier assigned to your account when your loan is first disbursed. You’ll need this number (sometimes called your “loan number”) to make payments, complete paperwork and contact your loan servicer with questions. Here’s how to find your student loan account number.
How to Find Your Student Loan Account Number
Your student loan account number is a unique identifier that is assigned to your specific loan. This number is used by your servicer to track your account and is important to know if you ever need to contact them about your loan. There are a few different ways that you can find your student loan account number.
Your loan servicer
Your loan servicer is a company that manages your federal student loan account. This is who you make your payments to, and who you contact if you have questions about your loan. You can find the name and contact information for your loan servicer on your monthly billing statement.
To find out who your loan servicer is, log in to Account Access and select “View Statement” from the Account Summary page. Your loan servicer’s name and contact information will be listed at the top of your monthly statement.
National Student Loan Data System
The National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS) is the U.S. Department of Education’s central database for student aid. NSLDS receives data from schools, guaranty agencies, the Direct Loan program, and other Department of Education programs. NSLDS Student Access provides a centralized, integrated view of Title IV loans and grants so that recipients of Title IV Aid can access and inquire about their loan and/or grant data in one centralized location.
To get to the National Student Loan Data System, go to www.nslds.ed.gov/nslds_SA/.
If you have not yet signed in to the National Student Loan Data System:
1. Click on “First Time Users”
2. Enter your FSA ID
3. Enter the requested personal information
4. Select up to 10 loan types from the list provided
5. Select federal or state debt
6. Review your information for accuracy
7. Click “Submit”
Annual Credit Report
It’s important to keep tabs on your credit report and credit score, especially if you plan on taking out a loan. Your credit report is a record of your financial history that includes information about your payment history, outstanding debt, and other factors. Your credit score is a number that represents your creditworthiness—the higher the number, the better.
You can get a free copy of your credit report from each of the three major credit bureaus—Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion—once every 12 months. You can also get your credit score from some Credit Karma and other personal finance websites. If you see any errors on your credit report, you can dispute them with the credit bureau.
Once you have a copy of your credit report, you’ll be able to see your student loan account number(s). This is information that you’ll need if you want to consolidate your loans or apply for repayment plans. If you’re having trouble finding your account number(s), contact your loan servicer(s) for help.
Conclusion
That’s all you need to do! If you have any questions about your student loan account number, or if you need help logging in to your account, feel free to contact your lender directly.
