History of State Employees Credit Union

The State Employees Credit Union (SECU) is a North Carolina state-chartered credit union founded in 1937. SECU has 2,900 employees and over 2.3 million members.

In 1934, a group of North Carolina state employees formed a credit union called the State Employees Cooperative Credit Association. The credit union was originally located in the basement of the state Capitol building in Raleigh, North Carolina. In 1937, the credit union was chartered by the state of North Carolina and renamed the State Employees Credit Union.

Since its inception, SECU has grown to become one of the largest credit unions in the United States. As of December 31, 2016, SECU had $34.1 billion in assets and 2.3 million members.
